HPQ Silicon (TSXV:HPQ), a battery materials stock, is reporting standout battery testing results from its France-based partner, Novacium.

After 900 cycles on 18650-type batteries, Novacium‘s GEN3 silicon-anode material batteries outperformed leading commercial 18650 cells, achieving:

  • A significantly elevated average Coulombic Efficiency of 99.88 per cent.
  • A 31 per cent cumulative energy gain over graphite benchmark batteries, with about 95 per cent of anode material in lithium-ion batteries made from graphite, according to the European Carbon and Graphite Association. HPQ and Novacium see their silicon-based material replacing more than 10 per cent of that graphite at low cost.
  • More than 3,100 milliampere-hours (mAh) of capacity, while retaining more than 80 per cent of initial capacity.

According to Wednesday’s news release, the GEN3’s initial capacity retention far exceeds that of commercial 18650 battery cells from Panasonic, LG and Samsung, proving out its value-add in an over US$20 billion addressable market. Here are the figures:

  • Panasonic NCR18650GA (3,500 mAh): Retains 70 per cent capacity after ~300 cycles.
  • LG MJ1 (3,500 mAh): Retains between 70 and 80 per cent capacity between 300 and 400 cycles.
  • Samsung 30Q (3,000 mAh): Retains ~60 per cent capacity after 250 cycles.

HPQ and Novacium will now focus on establishing a pilot plant to further scale production of their silicon-based material.

Leadership insights

“These results at 900 cycles confirm that Novacium has successfully developed a unique capability to produce advanced silicon-based materials,” Dr. Jed Kraiem, COO of Novacium, said in a statement. “When blended with high-grade artificial graphite, these materials integrate seamlessly into commercial batteries (18650, 21700, 26650 and 4680), delivering world-class capacity and durability. Our analysis of the results concludes that targeted process refinements could unlock even greater performance gains and further minimize long-term degradation, while maintaining compatibility with existing manufacturing processes, paving the way for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.”

“By advancing our proprietary processes, we are leveraging the battery expertise and silicon-anode innovations developed throughout 2024 to deliver materials with low operating costs, minimal carbon footprints and exceptional performance. HPQ’s strategy remains focused on producing silicon-based materials for the 3C markets (computer, consumer and communication) – a US$12 billion market today, projected to grow to US$38.3 billion by 2030. This market is perfectly suited for the materials we have already validated at this stage of our development,” added Bernard Tourillon, president and chief executive officer of HPQ Silicon and Novacium. “Over time, our market focus will also expand to energy storage and electric vehicles.”
