Teck Resources Limited (TECK.A) and MEDATech work to pilot a fully electric transport truck to haul copper concentrate on highways.
The pilot is expected to begin in summer and is projected to eliminate 418 tonnes of CO2 annually for the first pilot vehicle.
The truck will travel between Teck’s Highland Valley Copper Operations (HVC) and a rail loading facility in Ashcroft, B.C.
The pilot project expands on Teck’s recently announced agreement to work towards deploying 30 of Caterpillar’s zero-emissions large haul trucks at its steelmaking coal operations in the Elk Valley.
MEDATech’s ALTDRIVE-powered fifth-wheel Western Star is providing an opportunity for Teck’s to achieve its goal of reducing the carbon intensity of its operations by 33 per cent by 2030.
Don Lindsay, President and CEO, Teck, commented,
“Teck is already one of the world’s lowest carbon-intensity producers of copper, zinc and steelmaking coal, which are key materials to enable the low-carbon transition, and we are committed to further reducing the carbon intensity of our operations to support a cleaner future.”
The ALTDRIVE system being used is designed for the haul cycle at HVC requiring a vehicle that weighs 65,000 kilograms loaded. It can do the same 95-kilometre roundtrips four to five times a day.
The truck batteries will charge during downhill haul through regenerative braking, and the rig will require a short battery recharge at the rail terminal making the expected haul cycle time to be the same as a conventional truck.
The battery-electric drive system is expected to work more efficiently compared to a diesel engine.
