Magna (MG) continues to innovate vehicle safety with its new Driver Monitoring System.

The system monitors the driver’s head, eye, and body movement and can alert drivers if they have had their eyes off the road for too long.

It can also detect signs drowsiness, fatigue, and distracted driving.

The new technology is important, as distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of vehicle accidents in the world.

The system, which is integrated with the interior mirror, accounts for regular driving actions like checking side-view mirrors. It can be customized to alert distracted behaviors with audio or visual notifications.

The scalable technology can also be upgraded to include child presence detection, seat belt detection, and memory-based passenger recognition.

John O’Hara, President of Magna Mirrors and Electronics, commented that,

“The system is a natural extension of our leadership expertise in cameras and mirror technology and demonstrates our systems-level approach that brings innovative solutions to industry challenges.”

“Magna’s Driver Monitoring System offers automakers and consumers a future-focused solution that addresses a significant societal issue – distracted driving,” he added.

The United States’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has designated April as distracted driving month to remind the public of the dangers of distracted driving.

Magna is combining its expertise in cameras and mirrors to help automakers make roads safer.

Magna is a mobility technology company with more than 158,000 employees, 342 manufacturing operations and 91 product development, engineering and sales centres in 27 countries.

Magna (MG) is down 0.27 per cent and is trading at C$112.85 per share as of 11:24 am ET.
