Sixth Wave Innovations (SIXW) has been granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its method of metal extraction and purification.

Sixth Wave is a nanotechnology company with patented technologies that focus on the extraction and detection of target substances at the molecular level.

This patent extends the company’s existing patent portfolio to include methodologies relating to the molecularly imprinted polymers. The polymers selectively bind to target metals ions, achieving more efficient metal extraction.

The technique has been successfully commercialized for precious metals. The patent focuses on high-value metals associated with the growing demand for green energy alternatives, advanced manufacturing, and environmental remediation.

Dr. Jon Gluckman, President and CEO of Sixth Wave, commented,

“In particular, lithium demand is expected to double over the next six years… the prolific growth of lithium batteries will necessitate innovative and efficient recycling methods to meet expected demand.”

MIPs has potential to allow direct purification from these resources with greater efficiency and lower environmental impact than existing technology.

With this patent issuance, Sixth Wave has advanced its intellectual property (IP) portfolio to over nine issued patents, and 39 pending patents for molecular detection and extraction using MIPS and other molecular separation techniques.

Sixth Wave believes there are significant opportunities to monetize its metals purification MIPs being sold under the IXOS® brand name. The technology can enable the delivery of efficient, scalable, environmentally friendly, and lower-cost solutions to our mining customers.

Sixth Wave Innovations Inc. (SIXW) is up 6.67 per cent trading at $0.16 per share as of 1:03 p.m. ET
