MEG Energy (TSX:MEG) is set to appoint the only female chief executive officer of the oil-sands industry.

In a news release, the Calgary-based company stated current chief operating officer Darlene Gates will succeed Derek Evans as the company’s CEO in May, which will make her the sole female CEO of an oil-sands producer.

Evans will step down from his role as of May 1, having assumed the role of CEO back in 2018. Since then, he has assisted the company in strengthening its balance sheet, improving efficiencies and reshaping the company’s long-term strategy.

Gates joined MEG Energy in 2021 and has more than 30 years of experience in the oil and gas sector. Prior to joining MEG Energy, she served as the president of ExxonMobil Alaska and has progressed through many technical, managerial, financial and operating positions in Canada, the United States, Germany and Qatar.

“I am excited to lead our talented and innovative team as we continue to develop our world-class, Canadian-based asset in its mission to supply the world with affordable, secure, environmentally and socially responsible energy. I look forward to the opportunity of working with all our stakeholders to realize the true long-term potential of MEG,” Gates said in a statement.

Gates will also be nominated for election to the board of directors at the company’s annual general meeting slated for May 7.

MEG is an energy company focused on sustainable in situ thermal oil production in the southern Athabasca oil region of Alberta.

Shares of MEG Energy (TSX:MEG) are up 2.51 per cent to C$29.78 as of 12:23 pm ET.
