AMP Robotics Corp., a leader in AI-powered sortation technology for the waste and recycling sector, has signed a partnership with Waste Connections Inc. (TSX/NYSE:WCN) to equip and operate a cutting-edge recycling facility in Commerce City. Set to be commissioned in early 2026, this facility will utilize the innovative AMP ONE system, enhancing the processing capabilities for single-stream recycling.
The new facility is designed to process up to 62,000 tons of recyclable materials annually, leveraging AMP’s Smart Sortation technology. This advanced system will automate the sorting process, enabling the extraction of targeted commodities and the production of custom feedstock blends. AMP will not only provide the technology but will also operate and maintain the system, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
The AMP ONE system is engineered to deliver high recovery rates and guaranteed performance, autonomously processing specific material streams. It features continuous AI monitoring for material quality and purity, allowing for real-time optimization and flexibility in operations. This innovative design replaces traditional sorting screens, significantly enhancing the facility’s operational capabilities and responsiveness to issues such as jams or performance drops.
“AMP’s innovative design, enabled by its technology, allows the company to offer us a competitive package for achieving our goals in the region,” Waste Connections’ division vice president, Mark Ceresa said in a news release. “The system is flexible to our scale, sorting, and Extended Producer Responsibility compliance needs, and can adapt as our commodity needs and waste stream changes. AMP offers us a unique way to enter this market, by guaranteeing these capabilities on a pay-per-ton contract.”
This collaboration builds on a successful history between AMP and Waste Connections. In 2020, the two companies signed a long-term agreement to deploy 24 AI-guided robotics systems across various Waste Connections Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs). Their partnership expanded in 2022 with the deployment of over 50 additional systems, solidifying AMP’s position as the largest operator of AI-guided robotics in the industry.
As the demand for efficient recycling solutions grows, this new facility represents a significant step forward in advancing sustainable waste management practices, showcasing the potential of AI technology in enhancing recycling operations.
