Avrupa Minerals Ltd. (TSXV: AVU) reported that it has filed a new exploration reservation application in central Finland covering the past-producing Ruostesuo zinc-copper mine, along with extensions of known mineralization and what it described as a large area of untested geological and geophysical anomalies.

The company said the reservation application is in the Vihanti-Pyhäsalmi Mining District, about 20 km southeast of the historic Pyhäsalmi zinc-copper mine. The application is held by Akkerman Finland Oy (AFOy), a Finnish partnership owned 49% by Avrupa and 51% by Akkerman Exploration BV.

In the release, Avrupa described historical activity at Ruostesuo by Finnish company Outokumpu, which mined the zinc-copper massive sulfide deposit in 1988–89. Citing historic internal reports, Avrupa said about 265,000 metric tonnes of ore were mined along a strike length of 200 meters to a maximum depth of 50 meters.

Avrupa also cited historic exploration work, including 169 shallow drill holes completed by Outokumpu from 1960 to 1989. According to the release, few holes exceeded 250 meters in depth, even though the massive sulfide mineralization appeared to continue beyond that level.

The company said Outokumpu also carried out geophysical surveys, and that coincident gravity and conductivity anomaly highs in the interior of an eastern synform could indicate a potential massive sulfide target.

Paul Kuhn, President and Chief Executive Officer of Avrupa Minerals, said, “At this time, we are looking for a potential partner to help drive forward this unique exploration opportunity located in a well-known, well-mineralized historic mining district.”

Avrupa described itself as a junior exploration and development company using a project generator model. It said it is advancing nine copper-zinc volcanogenic massive sulfide targets and one orogenic gold prospect in central Finland through its partnership with Akkerman Exploration B.V. and AFOy.
