Aduro Clean Technologies (ACT), in partnership with the University of Western Ontario, has announced the approval of a research grant.

The research project, which is entitled “Tuning Supercritical Fluids for Polymer Recycling to Monomers and Chemicals,” has been approved and awarded $1.15 million in non-repayable funds.

The grant came from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Alliance and Mitacs Accelerate Grants Program (Mitacs).

Over the duration of the project, Aduro will contribute $382,500 (plus HST), with NSERC and Mitacs contributing a total of $1,147,500.

This represents a three-to-one ratio of non-dilutive matching of funds directed to supporting and accelerating the company’s path to commercialization.

The research project will commence in November 2022 and will run for three years.

The objective of this research project is to evaluate the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic contaminants present in plastic feedstocks, including food, organic waste, plasticizers, and fillers, under varying conditions to maximize output, quality, and yield.

The commercial goal is to be able to develop optimal strategies that will minimize the need for expensive sorting and separation systems for pre-processing treatment.

“The project is a great opportunity to again collaborate with Aduro; the project will also support advanced training of many graduate students and post-doctoral fellows who will be the research and industry leaders of tomorrow in chemical recycling,” said Paul Charpentier, professor at Western University.

“This project will deliver critical insights and strategies for pre-treatment and post-processing techniques in support of Aduro’s HCT,” noted Ofer Vicus, Chief Executive Officer at Aduro.

The National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) is the major federal agency responsible for funding natural sciences and engineering research in Canada.

Mitacs is a non-profit national research organization that, in partnership with Canadian academia, private industry and government, operates research and training programs in fields related to industrial and social innovation.

Aduro Clean Technologies is a developer of patented water-based technologies to chemically recycle waste plastics, convert heavy crude and bitumen into lighter, more valuable oil, and transform renewable oils into higher-value fuels or renewable chemicals.

Aduro Clean Technologies Inc. opened trading at C$0.78 per share.
