Aleafia Health (TSX:ALEF) has announced the launch of its next-day, direct-to-home medical cannabis delivery service.

The company currently operates a variety of medical clinics, education centres, and production facilities for cultivating and selling cannabis products.

While the delivery service has been under development for some time, the COVID-19 outbreak has only added to its necessity.

First deliveries should start within the next two weeks, after which the service will remain a permanent feature.

Aleafia says that by operating its own delivery system, potential impacts to postal services and third-party handlers will be negated. It will also mitigate the risks associated with COVID-19, while still allowing self-isolating patients access to products.

The delivery service will initially be available to patients in Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe Region near Toronto. The area is currently home to over 9 million people.

Aleafia’s next steps will be to undertake expansion efforts to facilitate additional markets, as well as the introduction of same-day delivery.

Aleafia Health’s CEO, Geoffrey Benic, said that by controlling the “last mile” of the supply chain, Aleafia can offer customers much more efficient service.

“In addition to launching home delivery, earlier this month we transitioned to conducting 100 per cent of patient consultations remotely through telemedicine, with the goal of not missing a single patient appointment.

“Introducing home delivery has been long in the works and will be a permanent feature that we offer moving forwards,” he added.

Aleafia Health (ALEF) is currently up 5.63 per cent to C$0.38 at 9:46am EST.
