NFI Group (NFI) has received a followup order from a California transit agency for its hydrogen electric transit bus.

The order from California’s SunLine Transit Agency is for five additional forty-foot fuel cell-electric Xcelsior CHARGE H2 heavy-duty transit buses.

The order comes after SunLine’s previous order last year for five of the zero-emission vehicles.

The new order brings the agency’s total zero-emission fleet to 26 fuel cell-electric vehicles.

Winnipeg-based NFI’s Xcelsior CHARGE H2 is a battery-electric vehicle that uses compressed hydrogen as an energy source and range extender. The technology means the vehicles requires only six to 20 minutes to refuel.

Fuel cell-electric technology is fully zero-emission and an innovative way to obtain extended-range operation similar to existing transit vehicles. the vehicle is built on New Flyer’s existing Xcelsior platform.

The vehicles can save between 85 and 135 tons of greenhouse gas per year from tailpipe emissions than a conventional diesel bus.

“NFI has delivered 65 heavy-duty buses to SunLine since 2004, of which 22 were built on our proven Xcelsior platform. SunLine is a pioneer in fuel cell adoption, and this follow-on order is a testament to the proven performance and reliability of our Xcelsior CHARGE H2 bus, which delivers extended range of up to 350 miles. We look forward supporting SunLine as it furthers clean mobility in California,” said President, North American Bus and Coach Chris Stoddart.

NFI Group is down 1.03 per cent, trading at $25.02 at 12:07 pm ET.
