The European Commission granted marketing authorization to Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) and BioNTech’s (NASDAQ:BNTX) 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine formula targeting the new XFG variant – which peaked at 74 per cent of infections globally in October 2025 – in individuals 6 months of age and older.

The vaccine is based on BioNTech’s proprietary mRNA technology, which has informed more than five billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to date.

The authorization, valid in all 27 EU member states, as well as Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, follows evidence submissions on the part of Pfizer and BioNTech to the European Medicines Agency supporting vaccine safety and efficacy, including strong immune responses against circulating SARS-CoV-2 lineages such as XFG, XFG.1.1, NB.1.8.1, PQ.17 and PQ.2.8.1, among others.

According to Wednesday’s news release, Pfizer and BioNTech have begun manufacturing in anticipation of the colder months ahead, concurrently submitting vaccine data to regulatory authorities around the world.
