Excelsior Mining (MIN) has hired Robert Winton as the new General Manager for its Gunnison Copper project in southern Arizona.

Excelsior hopes to benefit from Robert’s wealth of experience in strategic planning and leadership. Robert will also become the company’s Senior Vice President.

Prior to his appointment with Excelsior Robert was the General Manager and President of Nyrstar Clarksville, where he was responsible for a 130-kiloton zinc refinery in Tennessee.

Prior to that he worked at Hudbay Minerals as the Vice President of the Manitoba Business unit. At Hudbay he was responsible for three underground mines, three mills, a zinc refinery and 1,400 employees.

The company’s former General Manger, Greg Duschek, vacated the position to fill the role of Interim CFO.

The company has been working toward restarting its Gunnison project and has high hopes that Robert will be the man to bring the project into full-scale production. The current target has a sustained project restart quota of 25 million pounds of copper per year.

Thus far activities have been limited to injecting acid solution into wells on the property and then recovering solution from adjacent wells.

President and CEO of Excelsior Mining, Stephen Twyerould, said the board was very pleased that Robert had joined the team.

“Excelsior will benefit from his proven track record of developing teams that exceed expectations, and in his ability as a senior mining executive to suit a culture of personal empowerment and collaboration,” he said.

Excelsior Mining (MIN) is up 2.7 per cent and is trading at C$0.75 per share at 1:10 pm EDT.
