HPQ Silicon (HPQ) is reporting that its GEN3 PUREVAP Quartz Reduction Reactor is now operational.

The reactor seeks to transform quartz into high-purity silicon at reduced cost and carbon footprint.

Technology provider, PyroGenesis (PYR), will now test the reactor’s pilot plant over the next two weeks. Once parameters prove satisfactory, it will introduce materials into the hot reactor to enable process improvements. It will then operate the reactor over a few months of continuous production.

Upon successful silicon production, HPQ will initiate work on value-added silicon products, provide samples to potential off-takers, work alongside Novacium to develop silicon-based applications, and advance the deployment of commercial-scale systems (2,500 tonnes per year).

“We are one step closer to reaching our goal of disrupting silicon manufacturing, an industry that still relies on a conventional process developed back in the 1890s,” stated Bernard Tourillon, HPQ’s President and CEO.

HPQ Silicon is developing silica and silicon products for battery and electric vehicle manufacturers, among other industries.

PyroGenesis Canada focuses on advanced plasma processes and sustainable solutions to reduce greenhouse gases.

HPQ Silicon (HPQ) is down by 1.96 per cent, trading at $0.25 per share as of 2:16 pm EST.

PyroGenesis (PYR) is down by 4.52 per cent, trading at $1.48 per share as of 2:40 pm EST.
