Global design and technology firm IBI Group (IBG) has purchased southern Ontario-based Cole Engineering Group.

Founded in 2003, Cole Engineering provides services in areas such as water, environment, urban development and transportation, and is one of the largest independent civil engineering firms in Ontario.

IBI Group CEO Scott Stewart said the company has worked with Cole Engineering previously on a number of projects such as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in Toronto.

“With its rich expertise in linear infrastructure and water management, this acquisition strengthens IBI’s capabilities and competitiveness across all areas of our business, allowing us to bring more services to bear on our major public-sector projects, and deepen our relationships with our private-sector developer clients,” Stewart said.

In a news release, IBI stated Cole Engineering’s expertise in urban development and land engineering will complement IBI’s capabilities in an array of areas, allowing it to offer additional site development services to its property development clients.

For instance, Cole Engineering’s established water planning practice enhances IBI’s current expertise in this sector, bringing additional background in water/wastewater demand modelling and planning.

Cole Engineering CEO Moshen Mortada said the acquisition will be one of the most significant infrastructure engineering teams in Canada.

“With a client service focus, cultural synergies and growth opportunities for employees across organizations, IBI’s transformative digital strategies, and strengthened project delivery capabilities, I am confident this transition will bring tremendous value to our stakeholders,” Mortada said.

Through the purchase, IBI will welcome 180 Cole Engineering staff members.

Earlier this year, IBI Group secured a four-year Airport Ground Transportation Management System contract in New York and New Jersey.

IBI Group is up 1.66 per cent and is trading for C$7.36 per share
