Marcus Hardy, Chief of the Red Rock Indian Band in Ontario, spoke with Simon Druker about a new partnership with the BMI Group at PDAC 2023.
The partnership seeks to open up shipping lanes in Lake Superior, near the band’s residences, down through Niagara and the St. Lawrence Seaway to facilitate the transportation of mining equipment.
Water-based transportation offers considerable safety, efficiency and ESG advantages compared to ground-based due to northern Ontario’s lack of infrastructure to support such heavy traffic.
BMI Group has purchased part of Red Rock’s initial settlement, enabling members to inhabit and serve as stewards of the land as the venture prepares to receive its first load over the next 6 to 12 months. Amidst numerous mine ramp-ups in the Ring of Fire and increasing support from the Ontario government, the parties are excited to blend favourable economics with Indigenous conservation principles for generations to come.
