Lithium Americas (LAC) is now preparing an Environment Impact Statement for the Thacker Pass Project based in Nevada, US.

A Notice of Intent formally commenced the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process run the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management.

The NEPA process is intended to take twelve months and will culminate with the Bureau of Land Management’s final decision on Lithium Americas’ application.

The intended mine will process up to 60,000 tonnes of lithium metal mined per year.

The mine also intends to produce “carbon neutral” lithium products through a number of green and energy saving initiatives built into the mine’s design.

By retaining heat from the mine’s processes in order to generate carbon-free electricity and steam, Lithium Nevada hopes to power an on-site processing plant producing battery-grade lithium for the U.S. market.

Alexi Zawadzki, CEO of Lithium Nevada is positive about the environmentally-minded project.

“Our vision is for a more sustainable battery supply chain in the U.S.,” he said.

The Bureau of Land Management’s decision on the Thacker Pass Lithium Project is expected in early 2021.

Lithium Americas Corp (LAC) was down 3.5 per cent with shares currently trading at C$5.47
