MDA Space (TSX:MDA) has been awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract from the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) for its Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense (SHIELD) program.

The contract could position the Canadian space technology company to compete for future task orders supporting one of the United States’ most expansive defence modernization efforts.

The SHIELD program spans a wide range of military domains—including land, sea, air, cyberspace, and space—and is designed to strengthen the layered defence architecture that holds U.S. national security together. By securing a position on the SHIELD IDIQ, MDA Space gains an opportunity to contribute advanced capabilities across mission areas that demand rapid innovation and scalability.

Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space, emphasized the significance of the award, noting that it reflects the company’s decades-long heritage in delivering mission-critical systems. “Our selection for the Missile Defense Agency SHIELD IDIQ is a recognition of the technology, talent and expertise MDA Space offers to meet defence, security and sovereignty requirements,” Greenley said in the company’s announcement.

MDA Space shares saw a 6 per cent rise as investors responded to the company’s strengthened positioning within U.S. defence procurement channels. Analysts highlighted the SHIELD contract as a major opportunity for MDA Space to deepen its involvement in U.S. programs that require advanced robotics, satellite technologies, and geointelligence—core strengths developed over more than 55 years.

Although the company did not disclose the financial scope or specific upcoming task orders tied to the IDIQ, the award aligns MDA Space with one of the largest and most competitive defence acquisition vehicles currently active. SHIELD, which supports the Department of Defense’s broader objective of modernizing missile defence and multi‑domain security, includes participation from numerous industry partners and features a contract ceiling that allows for rapid issuance of work across the defence ecosystem.

The announcement also arrives during a period of renewed focus on bolstering U.S. defence resilience in increasingly contested environments. MDA Space’s inclusion among SHIELD‑eligible contractors signals continued confidence in the company’s ability to deliver sophisticated space-based and terrestrial capabilities essential for next-generation defence architecture.

MDA Space is a go-to name for robotics, satellite systems, and geointelligence in the global space industry, with a pioneering track record spanning over 450 missions.

MDA Space stock (TSX:MDA) last traded at C$28.92 and has risen 2.88 per cent since this time last year.
