The Battle for the Future of the Automotive Industry: Mercedes-Benz vs. BYD
The battle for the future of the automotive industry is currently being fought with extreme intensity. On one side are the German automakers, including one of their flagship brands: Mercedes-Benz. With great passion, a spirit of innovation, and German engineering expertise, the premium manufacturer is trying to defend its traditional turf. But the winds on the international markets are blowing incredibly harshly, especially when the Asian giant BYD flexes its now-enormous muscles. The Chinese automaker has sounded the charge for an unprecedented export offensive and is pushing into Europe and South America with all its might.
The latest figures are in BYD’s favour, with overseas sales skyrocketing 82.46% in the second quarter to over 471,000 vehicles. As a result, management has boldly raised its global export target for 2026 to 1.5 million units. While the domestic market in China, however, is faltering massively and recording drastic sales declines, BYD is already celebrating the production of its 100,000th electric vehicle in Brazil. In addition, the company is launching the new BYD King plug-in hybrid in Mexico, which boasts an impressive range of 1,680 km.
Political Hurdles and Headwinds in Europe
Yet BYD’s triumphant march through Europe is currently running into political turbulence. In Hungary, a state subsidy worth billions for the planned BYD plant in Szeged is suddenly under strict scrutiny by the new government. The controversial move by former Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto to step directly into BYD’s executive leadership immediately prompted the authorities to take action. After all, this involves subsidies totaling 20 billion HUF (Hungarian forint) and an investment of nearly EUR 4 billion. Despite these massive attacks and the threat of EU punitive tariffs, BYD shares remain stubbornly in a holding pattern at prices just under EUR 10 and have recently recaptured the 50-day SMA. For Mercedes-Benz, however, BYD’s delivery figures represent a clear wake-up call. The Stuttgart-based company is now pooling all its innovative strength to withstand this head-on attack from the Far East and defend its (former) dominant position in the luxury segment. But Mercedes-Benz shares are currently on the brink. There is plenty of speculation, but perhaps one day a Chinese automaker will acquire one of Germany’s struggling premium auto manufacturers. There are certainly several candidates that are facing challenges at the moment.
The Key to Mobility: Safe and Clean Energy
From electric mobility on our roads, it is just a short leap to the crucial question of a secure power supply. Without a reliable and, above all, clean energy source, even the best and most beautiful electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and BYD are of little use. This is where a completely different sector enters the picture—one that, in the shadow of current geopolitical crises, is likely to rapidly gain strategic importance and form the foundation of the industry of the future.
American Atomics: Building a Uranium Supply Chain
We turn our attention to American Atomics. The company is highly focused on uranium exploration in North America. The company’s main strategy is aptly named “From Rock to Reactor.” The goal is to establish a completely independent domestic supply chain for nuclear fuel. Given the tense global situation, this would be a logical and sensible step. American Atomics is also an official member of the US Defence Production Act consortium for the nuclear fuel cycle. This places the company directly at the source of important political decisions and allows it to benefit from promising networks.
Most recently, management provided some very interesting updates. On July 16, the company filed a detailed technical report in accordance with the strict Canadian NI 43-101 standard for the Lisbon Valley East project in the state of Utah. The history of this region is truly remarkable. On the western side of the geological formation, nearly 78 million pounds of uranium have been successfully mined in the past. The eastern side, however, has been little explored to date because it lies significantly deeper due to a land shift. The available drilling data, however, points to a mirror-image distribution with similarly high potential. To efficiently process this valuable material in the future, management is planning a more robust, regional processing model. A central mill is intended to consolidate the ore from many smaller mines in the region. To this end, the company has secured advanced metallurgical technology through a joint venture with CVMR and is collaborating with Disa Technologies for the clean processing of mine tailings.
American Atomics is also continuing to expand its workforce. On July 7, Jolene Molitoris was appointed to the advisory board. The former head of the US Federal Railroad Administration brings exactly the right experience to solve logistical challenges, such as those related to future transportation.
In addition, the company announced on July 6 that it is switching to semi-annual financial reporting, thereby saving high administrative costs and reducing the behind-the-scenes bureaucratic burden.
Technical Analysis
Despite this progress, the current share price does not truly reflect this development. American Atomics’ stock now appears to be severely oversold. The price currently stands at about CAD 0.175. The RSI has also reached 34, and the oversold zone begins at 30. A turnaround could be imminent. The very bold might consider buying in stages now, while others may simply wait for the stock to bottom out completely. If the price recovers, the stock could, as it has in the past, quickly rally toward CAD 0.25 to 0.30. But for now, everything remains speculative.
Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with premium quality worldwide. However, the company is struggling with sales, as reflected in the share price, which is trading near a multi-year low. BYD is putting immense pressure on the global market and forcing its European competitors to take decisive action, but it must first prove it can overcome political hurdles in Europe and the “scandal” surrounding subsidy allocation. American Atomics is working quietly and steadily on North American energy security. The foundation is being expanded. With a little patience, a lucrative future prospect could develop here for speculative investors.
