Northland Power (TSX:NPI) opened Alberta’s largest battery energy storage facility, which is capable of delivering 80 MW/160 MWh of capacity for grid-balancing purposes.

This article is a journalistic opinion piece which has been written based on independent research. It is intended to inform investors and should not be taken as a recommendation or financial advice.

The facility, officially named Jurassic, was completed under budget and ahead of schedule following nearly 75,000 hours worked, and is backed by a 15-year offtake agreement for 100% of its capacity, adding a reliable source of cash flow to Northland’s already free cash-flowing operations.

According to Tuesday’s news release, Jurassic is Northland’s second storage project, joining the Oneida facility in Ontario, whose 250 MW/1,000 MWh capacity made it the largest battery storage facility in Canada at the time of construction.

Numerous projects in development highlighted in the company’s Q2 2026 results position it for further growth.

Leadership commentary

“Achieving commercial operations at Jurassic demonstrates Northland’s ability to consistently deliver energy infrastructure safely, efficiently and as planned,” Christine Healy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Northland Power, said in a statement. “Jurassic highlights our exceptional project execution and multi-technology capabilities and operations across electricity generation and storage.”
