Nouveau Monde Graphite (NOU) is closer to becoming an end-to-end battery materials producer, thanks to a new agreement with Forge Nano.

The deal will allow Nouveau to use Forge’s proprietary Atomic Laser Disposition (ALD) coating technology, which is expected to enhance the performance of Nouveau’s graphite as part of the Lithium-ion battery system.

Nouveau said that this is the last step in the process required to complete its graphite-based product range for the electric vehicle and renewable energy market.

To begin with, Nouveau will supply Forge with test batches of spherical graphite to assess the optimum use of the ALD coating technology. Once this stage has been completed, the company anticipates purchasing its own ALD unit, which will be added to its battery anode material demonstration plant in Québec.

As such, Nouveau will be able to begin preliminary production activities in the near future, with a view to reaching full-scale commercial production by 2023 at roughly 40,000 tonnes of battery anode material per year.

Eric Desaulniers, President and CEO of Nouveau Monde Graphite, said he is excited to be collaborating with Colorado-based Forge Nano.

“Partnering with Forge Nano will enable Nouveau Monde to market an active anode material that is optimised for each battery system, using different cathode and electrolyte chemistries.

“This coating layer will play a pivotal role in matching ion exchange compatibility, that will drive battery performance beyond what is currently known,” he added.

Nouveau Monde Graphite (NOU) is currently up 7.84 per cent and is trading at C$0.28 per share at 1:33pm EDT.
