Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) announced plans to commit US$1 billion over the next five years toward projects related to scientific research and development in the United States, with a focus on areas including quantum computing, healthcare and energy security.

The announcement was made at the Science: A New Golden Age event in Washington, D.C., where government officials, industry representatives and members of the scientific community discussed public-private partnerships in research and innovation.

According to the company, the investment will include support for research institutions, quantum computing initiatives and cloud service providers that work with U.S. government agencies. NVIDIA said it will also provide access to computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure for researchers participating in related programs.

The announcement coincided with an expansion of the Genesis Mission, a Department of Energy initiative aimed at advancing scientific research through high-performance computing and AI technologies. Nvidia is one of several industry partners involved in the program.

As part of the initiative, Nvidia said it will participate in a number of newly announced Phase 2 Genesis Mission projects, including efforts related to quantum computing, fusion energy, accelerator design and microelectronics.

The company has worked with U.S. national laboratories for more than 20 years. In 2024, NVIDIA announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to help develop a new supercomputer for scientific research at Argonne National Laboratory. It is also supporting the deployment of additional computing systems at Argonne and Los Alamos National Laboratories.

The latest commitment reflects continued investment by Nvidia in research infrastructure and scientific computing as demand for advanced AI and high-performance computing resources grows across government, academic and industrial research sectors.

“With a US$1 billion investment, Nvidia is putting advanced Super Intelligence in the hands of America’s scientists to accelerate breakthroughs in medicine, energy and materials,” Nvidia’s founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, said in a news release. “This is how America turns scientific leadership into industrial leadership, and innovation into jobs and opportunity for generations.”

Nvidia Corp. is a full-stack computing infrastructure company.

Nvidia stock (NASDAQ:NVDA) closed 2.82% lower at US$230.77 but has risen more than 20% since the year began.
