Rogers for Business has announced a new project to bring its fibre-optic network to small businesses in Calgary.

Calgary has the second-highest concentration of small businesses among major cities in Canada, making it the perfect candidate for this new enterprise.

Rogers’s new infrastructure will enable reliable high-speed connectivity to over 2,500 businesses, including government and public sector establishments, medium and large enterprises, and small businesses.

This includes enabling the University of Calgary’s 5G campus, which will further benefit IoT research and applications in the areas of energy, smart cities, transportation, and workplace safety.

Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of The City of Calgary, commented,

“The City of Calgary has been laser-focused on preparing for the needs of the new economy. Projects like this one will ensure our business community has what it needs to continue to compete and lead the country.”

“This is an innovative step forward, and one that will serve our city well for a long time to come,” he added.

Construction on the fibre-optic network, which began last year, is complete for all of downtown Calgary and is now expanding further.

Dean Prevost, President of Connected Home and Rogers for Business, also commented on the project.

“The impact of COVID-19 has put a spotlight on the vital role connectivity plays for Canadian businesses and the public sector. With this expansion in Calgary, we are delivering on our commitment to invest in Western Canada and support businesses of all sizes by providing them with more choice when it comes to high-speed fibre connectivity,” he said.

Future plans for Rogers include an agreement to combine Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications in Western Canada, which will allow the companies to build much-needed 5G networks and connect rural and Indigenous communities.

Rogers is the largest wireless service provider in Canada, with its more than 10 million subscribers equating to one-third of the total Canadian market.

Rogers Communications (RCI.A) is up 0.48 per cent and is trading at $62.30 per share as of 9:44 am ET.
