- The Royal Canadian Mint (MNT) is releasing a commemorative $2 coin in celebration of the 50-year anniversary of hockey’s 1972 Summit Series
- The coin will enter circulation today
- Three million coins have been minted, of which two million feature a fully coloured inner core
- The Mint is also issuing a number of collector coins in support of the historic anniversary

The Royal Canadian Mint (MNT) is releasing a commemorative $2 coin in celebration of the 50-year anniversary of hockey’s 1972 Summit Series.
The eight-game series pitted Canada against the Soviet Union, with four games played in each country. Canada ultimately triumphed, and the country was crowned the true world champion.
Paul Henderson scored the series-winning goal in a moment that is still replayed on TV 50 years later.
The reverse of the 50th Anniversary Summit Series $2 circulation coins was designed by Canadian artist Joel Kimmel. The inner core of the coin features two hockey players representing Team Canada.
Three million coins have been minted, of which two million feature a fully coloured inner core. These exciting new coins will gradually reach Canadians through their change as bank branches and businesses replenish their inventories of $2 circulation coins.
“Fifty years ago, I said that every one of us, all 35 guys, came out for Team Canada because we loved our country,” said Phil Esposito, a member of the 1972 team and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee.
“We came because we loved Canada. Today, it holds true. Every one of us is proud of what we did as a team and what we did for our country. The team came together and, importantly to all of us, the country came together.”
“Canada’s winning goal was the most important goal in hockey history,” said Esposito’s teammate and fellow Hockey Hall of Fame member Serge Savard.
“If you ask Ken Dryden, or Pete Mahovlich, or Yvan Cournoyer, it’s the highlight of our career, even more than winning the Stanley Cups. It’s something different. We did it for our country.”
The Mint is also issuing a number of collector coins in support of the historic anniversary.
