Novavax: Short Squeeze Potential

US vaccine developer Novavax is trading on the NASDAQ and is highly volatile. This is evident from the fact that the shares climbed from USD 5 to more than USD 20 within a few weeks in 2024. As the pandemic-driven economic boom subsided, the company had to navigate the transition to a more normalized market environment. Its latest financial figures paint a clear picture of this transformation. In the most recent quarter, Novavax generated revenue of USD 56.7 million while slipping into the red. This shows that past record revenues are now behind the company and that reliable new revenue sources must be established. Nevertheless, the stock—which most recently traded in the range of USD 8.05 to USD 8.80—is proving surprisingly resilient and has been up since the beginning of the year.

However, a key driver of the share price can currently be found across the biotech industry—specifically at Moderna. A historic study success by competitors Merck and Moderna in the field of personalized cancer vaccines caused Moderna’s stock to surge by nearly 200% within a single day at one point. Novavax is also likely to benefit directly from this, as the market is reassessing the potential of modern delivery systems. Here, Novavax possesses a valuable asset for future partnerships: its Matrix-M technology. With an average analyst price target of around USD 14.00, there is already considerable upside potential. At the same time, a short interest ratio of over 28% of the free float creates an explosive setup. Should positive news follow, the pressure from speculators to cover their short positions could trigger a rapid price rally.

Commerzbank: The Billion-Euro Gamble on the Verge of a Decisive Turning Point?

Commerzbank’s share price has continued to climb, most recently reaching new yearly highs just above EUR 40. This is due to the ongoing takeover battle with the major Italian bank UniCredit. The Milan-based bank has already secured access to approximately 47.6% of the voting rights through a share swap offer valued at around EUR 43 billion. What for months looked like an insurmountable defensive battle by Commerzbank’s decision-makers in Frankfurt and federal policymakers is now taking a new turn.

According to reports, key government officials in Berlin are signaling, for the first time, a willingness to negotiate the sale of the government’s 12.7% stake to UniCredit. A prerequisite for this remains a viable agreement on the bank’s future strategy. Should the block sale actually go through, UniCredit would cross the 60% threshold of shares and thereby gain a position of immense power. While the ECB’s European banking regulator sees no fundamental objections to a takeover in internal documents, Germany’s BaFin is urging caution. Even though Commerzbank CEO Bettina Orlopp retains control over day-to-day operations, the rapprochement has already begun. The ECB’s final decision this fall is therefore likely to set a precedent, perhaps even for the entire European banking sector.

HPQ Silicon: Operational Milestone and Chart Pattern

HPQ Silicon, the Canadian specialist in silicon materials and battery technologies, announced two milestones in August that are expected to reduce the technology’s commercial risk.

On August 6, the company announced that the HPQ ENDURA+ Gen4 21700 lithium-ion battery platform had successfully obtained UN 38.3 transport certification. Clearing this hurdle was important because it now allows for the legal worldwide shipment of the high-performance cells to international customers for upcoming qualification programs in the drone and defense sectors.

Just under two weeks later, on August 19, the next major piece of news followed. HPQ and its technology partner Novacium, through their partner LN Innov, received the very first commercial purchase order for GEN3 6S1P 6,000 mAh battery packs. These battery packs are based on Novacium’s silicon anode technology and are going directly to a regiment of the French Army to equip FPV drones.

The order was preceded by months of field testing by the military. Even though the financial volume of this initial order remains modest, entry into the European defense supply chain is an important milestone. It demonstrates the technology’s market readiness and effectively serves as a blueprint for the planned expansion into North America.

These advances have not yet been fully reflected in the chart, or only partially so. HPQ Silicon shares are currently trading at around CAD 0.145 and are forming solid horizontal support in the range of CAD 0.13 to 0.14. Noticeable upward pressure is building. If the share manages a sustained breakout above the resistance levels at CAD 0.155 and CAD 0.165, it could quickly gain momentum and surge toward the upper boundary at CAD 0.20. If this barrier is also breached, the previous all-time highs in the range of CAD 0.24 to 0.25 will come into focus. Should the operational momentum continue, a rally all the way to the CAD 0.30 mark would even be conceivable in the medium- to long-term.

Above CAD 0.155–0.165, the share could gain upward momentum.

In summary, all three companies offer interesting investment profiles. Novavax remains a highly volatile biotech stock that could now benefit significantly from the momentum surrounding Moderna and the covering pressure from short sellers. Commerzbank stands out as a banking stock at the center of a historic wave of consolidation, where political decisions are setting the tone. Here, the stock could continue its upward trajectory toward EUR 45. HPQ Silicon has laid the foundation for the future with its first military contracts and regulatory approvals in place. If it manages to clear the immediate hurdles on the chart, HPQ Silicon shares could now quickly gain momentum.
