Hate it or love it, AI is here to stay, and by here, I mean everywhere.

While much of the public debate has focused on generative AI tools, companies in the healthcare sector are increasingly applying AI to address practical medical challenges. One example is Diagnos Inc. (TSXV:ADK), a Canadian healthcare technology company focused on the early detection of eye disease.

With a market cap of just C$45 million, Diagnos develops and markets its Computer Assisted Retina Analysis (CARA) System, a software platform designed to help healthcare professionals identify retinal pathologies through AI-assisted image analysis. The technology analyzes retinal scans and helps detect conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, two leading causes of vision impairment. By automating portions of the screening process, CARA aims to provide healthcare providers with faster insights, improve efficiency, and support earlier intervention for patients at risk of vision loss.

The company’s use of AI highlights one of the technology’s growing healthcare applications. Rather than generating text or images, Diagnos’ platform is designed to assist clinicians with medical screening and decision-making, potentially helping to expand access to preventative eye care.

Stock performance reflects both opportunity and risk

Like many emerging healthcare technology companies, Diagnos has experienced a volatile share-price journey. The stock has gained more than 7% over the past year, although its performance has been far from linear. While shares were down slightly for the year overall, the stock mounted a significant rally beginning in August, climbing roughly 30% during that period.

The move appears to have coincided with a series of regulatory and commercialization milestones that have expanded the company’s potential market opportunities.

Saudi Arabia approval opens new market

One of the most significant recent developments for Diagnos came when the company received authorization from Saudi Arabia’s Food and Drug Authority to market the CARA platform in the country.

The approved version of the software includes detection algorithms for diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. According to the company, the technology can help healthcare providers identify vision-threatening conditions quickly and at a relatively low cost.

The approval represents another step in Diagnos’ broader international expansion strategy. Coming shortly after the company’s Health Canada authorization, the Saudi approval gives Diagnos access to a potentially substantial addressable market. With diabetes prevalence remaining a significant healthcare concern in the region, more than five million adults are estimated to require regular screening for diabetes-related eye diseases.

For a company focused on preventative eye care, the opportunity could provide an important avenue for future growth as it seeks to expand beyond its Canadian operations.

Building momentum in Canada

While international growth has attracted attention, Diagnos has also been actively expanding its footprint at home.

Earlier this month, the company announced the successful rollout of the CARA platform across Canada. According to Diagnos, 28 optometry clinics were onboarded within a two-week period, increasing the network to more than 60 optometrists using the system.

“The feedback we are receiving from optometrists and clinic staff validates our core mission: delivering a technology that not only meets regulatory standards but supports clinicians in providing better, faster care,” the company’s president and CEO, André Larente, stated in a media release. “With these successful early deployments, we are now fully determined to pursue our rollout strategy to equip clinics across all Canadian provinces,”

Healthcare providers have highlighted the platform’s ease of use, processing speed, and AI-assisted retinal image analysis capabilities. The company also reported positive feedback from patients, who benefited from faster and more efficient assessments.

The rollout is a sign of Diagnos’ ability to move from regulatory approval toward real-world adoption, a key stage for many healthcare technology companies seeking to commercialize new products.

Investor’s corner

Diagnos has been successful in its efforts to leverage artificial intelligence to improve the detection of serious eye diseases before symptoms become more severe. With recent regulatory approvals in Canada and Saudi Arabia, expanding clinic adoption, and growing international ambitions, the company is positioning itself within the evolving market for AI-assisted healthcare solutions.

Whether those developments translate into sustained commercial success remains to be seen. However, the company’s recent progress highlights how artificial intelligence is being applied beyond consumer applications, with a growing role in helping healthcare professionals deliver faster and potentially more effective patient care.

AI is helping Diagnos tackle preventable blindness, but it is far from the only healthcare company leveraging advanced technology to improve outcomes. From eye health to brain health, the next wave of innovation is reaching across multiple areas of medicine.

Diagnos stock (TSXV:ADK) opened trading with a slight bump at $0.36, but lost just over 1% in early trading. Though it has lost 8% since the year began, it is still sitting nearly 1.5% higher than where it was this time last year. Its OTC symbol, DGNOF, has seen trading at similar volumes.
