SNC-Lavalin’s (SNC) engineering subsidiary Atkins has been granted a 5 year extension of their contract as Architect Engineer for nuclear energy project, ITER.

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is under construction in southern France. It is currently the largest nuclear fusion energy experiment in the world.

According to Sandy Taylor, President of SNC-Lavalin’s Nuclear sector, ITER has brought 35 nations together “to build the world’s largest tokamak, a magnetic fusion device that has been designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy.”

Atkins is responsible for the design, construction oversight, coordination, and integration of the site’s 39 buildings.

The business will also work on site-wide infrastructure including roads, networks and galleries. They will provide services such as electrical supplies and mechanical handling.

As part of the Engage consortium, Atkins has worked on ITER for the last 10 years. Their collaboration with French and Spanish engineering companies on the project will continue until 2025.

Market Director of Nuclear New Build at Atkins, Christophe Junillon, said “The 5 year extension and contract renewal from F4E is a testament to the hard work and the collaborative effort of the teams involved in this genuinely ground-breaking project. We’re thrilled to continue our significant involvement.”

SNC-Lavalin’s share price is down 0.91 per cent, with shares trading at $30.54 apiece.
