TELUS is taking its telecommunication expertise into the farmstead, with the launch of a new agricultural-focussed business.

The newly created TELUS Agricultural was created out of the company’s recent global acquisitions spree and comprises 1,200 experts across Canada, the USA, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Armenia, Germany, China, and Australia.

Many of TELUS Agricultural’s new acquisitions are involved in food tracing and farm-to-table data management, a growing area in the traditionally low-tech sector.

TELUS hopes to monopolise on the data revolution sweeping the agri-food industry and aims to increase efficiency, production, and yields through its services.

Currently, TELUS’s newest arm supports seed manufacturers, farmers, grocery stores and restaurants across 100 million acres of agricultural land.

Francois Gratton, the new Chair of TELUS Agriculture, commented on the company’s hopes for its venture into the agri-business market.

“TELUS Agriculture is tackling agriculture and agri-food’s complex data management challenges by linking systems together in new ways. Connecting the value chain and building solutions that make it convenient and valuable to shift to digital will help our customers drive industry-wide profitability while delivering better, healthier products to the consumer,” he said.

Meanwhile, President and CEO of TELUS Darren Entwistle believes the launch reflects the company’s ongoing societal aims.

“The launch of TELUS Agriculture reflects TELUS’ unwavering commitment to our social purpose to leverage our world-leading technology to create remarkable human and social outcomes as, together, we help to protect and improve the global food system,” he added.

TELUS Agricultural adds to the telecommunication giant’s portfolio of auxiliary businesses, which include TELUS International and TELUS Health.

TELUS is up 0.12 per cent and is trading at C$24.98 per share at 10:20am EST.
