Canadian equities finished higher on Tuesday, supported by solid bank earnings despite renewed concerns over trade relations with the United States. Investors are closely watching the latest developments after President Donald Trump threatened to double tariffs on Canadian vehicles and auto parts to 50 per cent starting January 1, 2027. The announcement follows the collapse of trade negotiations last week. A previously proposed agreement would have reduced tariffs on Canadian cars and light trucks to 15 per cent and cut steel and aluminum duties to 25 per cent.

South of the border, US stocks extended their gains as Treasury yields continued to ease. Technology shares, particularly semiconductor companies, moved higher ahead of Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) awaited earnings release.
