A wide decline across markets dragged Canada’s main stock index lower on Monday. The telecom sector was the only one to see any gains.

U.S. indices also retreated to start the week. Traders are taking positions ahead of a deluge of interest rate decisions from major central banks this week.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.73 cents US, compared to 75.16 cents US on Friday.

US crude futures traded $1.79 lower at $77.89 a barrel, while the Brent contract lost $1.60 to $85.06 a barrel.

The price of gold was down US6.47 to US$1,922.18.

In world markets, the Nikkei was up 50.84 points to 27,433.40, the Hang Seng was down 619.17 points to 22,069.73, the FTSE was up 19.72 points to 7,784.87, and the DAX was down 23.95 points to 15,126.08.
