Despite another relatively subdued trading session, the TSX reached an intraday high of 36,661.19 on Tuesday, supported by strength in telecom and industrial stocks. Investor sentiment was kept in check by reports indicating that the United States and Iran may be moving closer to an agreement aimed at resolving their six-month conflict.
Barrick Mining (TSX:ABX) fell another 2 per cent following news it had appointed Sebastiaan Bock (not to be confused with Sebastian Bach) as chief executive officer for its Rest of World division.
Negotiations on the Middle East front remain challenging. President Donald Trump on Monday countered Iran’s peace proposals with demands for compensation related to casualties from wars, attacks, and protests. The exchange has raised concerns about further delays in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Only six commodity vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz in either direction on Monday. Although Iran says it is close to reaching an agreement with Oman on the matter, it continues to oppose direct negotiations with the US until certain conditions are met. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that talks cannot resume while Washington remains in breach of the June memorandum of understanding and has yet to provide compensation for those violations.
