Trevali Mining Corporation (TV) has discovered four of the eight missing workers from last month’s flood at the Perkoa Mine in Burkina Faso.
An intense rainstorm fell over the mine in April and closed off the main entrance. Four workers remain missing, and Trevali said its team will continue to work at full capacity to locate the missing persons. As a result, mining operations at Perkoa have been paused until further notice.
“Our deepest condolences are with our colleagues’ families during this difficult time, and all of us at Trevali grieve their loss,” Ricus Grimbeek, President and CEO of Trevali, said.
According to Trevali, families were notified as soon as each worker was recovered and identified. Senior representatives of Trevali and the Perkoa Mine mining contractor Byrnecut are in regular contact with the families of all eight workers.
The company has been working with the Burkinabe authorities on this matter such as the Ministry of Mines and Quarries, the National Emergency Rescue, and Military Civil construction, along with a few others.
Most of the mine workers underground or preparing to enter Perkoa were able to safely evacuate before the flooding took over. Unfortunately, the reported eight missing workers were working below the settled water level and so far, no communication with was given to the workers after an evacuation notice.
There are two refuge chambers located below where the flood water has settled that are designed to provide a refuge for trapped workers in times of crisis.
