The U.S. Army has accepted two of GE Aerospace’s T901-GE-900 engines for integration and testing into UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.

GE Aerospace is a global aerospace propulsion, services and systems company under General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE), with an installed base of around 44,000 commercial and 26,000 military aircraft engines.

“This delivery represents the beginning of a new era and a pivotal moment in our ongoing work with the U.S. Army,” Amy Gowder, president and CEO, Defense and Systems at GE Aerospace said  in a media release. “The T901 engine will ensure warfighters will have the performance, power, and reliability necessary to maintain a significant advantage on the battlefield.”

The T901 engine was developed by GE Aerospace, leaning into the company’s four decades of experience powering the Black Hawk and Apache helicopters with the combat-proven T700 engine, which has accumulated more than 100 million flight hours. The U.S. Army’s need for greater power and improved fuel efficiency prompted the development of the T901.

This follows the first ground test of an aircraft powered by a T901 engine. In April, the T901 successfully powered Sikorsky’s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft prototype, Raider X, providing data to support the engine’s integration into the Army’s UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache helicopters.

The T901 incorporates advanced commercial technologies, including 3D modeling, ceramic matrix composites and 3D-printed (additive) parts. These innovations enable the engine to deliver more power while reducing weight.

A notable feature of the T901 is its modular design, a concept carried over from the T700. This modularity contributes to the T901’s low cost, high reliability, ease of maintenance, and reduced life-cycle costs. By applying this modular architecture, the T901 integrates with the army’s existing helicopters and maintenance strategies, while exceeding performance expectations.

General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE) last traded at US$163.00 per share.
