Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER) and drone delivery pioneer Zipline announced a major partnership aimed at dramatically expanding autonomous delivery services across the United States, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of on-demand logistics.

Under the agreement, Uber Eats customers in select markets will begin receiving the option later this year to have their orders delivered by Zipline’s autonomous drones. The companies said the collaboration is designed to bring ultra-fast aerial delivery to millions of consumers while increasing efficiency for merchants and reducing traffic congestion on the ground.

As part of the partnership, Uber will also make a significant investment in Zipline. Together, the companies have set an ambitious goal of scaling operations to reach one million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029.

Zipline has established itself as one of the world’s largest autonomous delivery operators. The company currently operates across four continents and completes a delivery approximately every 20 seconds. Over the past decade, Zipline has built a global logistics network serving more than 5,000 hospitals and healthcare facilities. The company says its services help save more than 12,000 lives annually by rapidly delivering critical medical supplies.

The drone delivery provider has also accumulated more than 135 million autonomous flight miles and completed over 2.7 million deliveries involving more than 20 million individual items. Beyond healthcare, Zipline is now expanding its technology to support everyday consumer deliveries, promising delivery times of five to 10 minutes.

The partnership represents another milestone in Uber’s strategy to develop what it describes as the world’s most flexible hybrid delivery network. Uber already integrates traditional couriers with emerging technologies, including sidewalk robots and autonomous delivery systems. By adding Zipline’s drone network to its platform, Uber aims to match each delivery with the most efficient transportation method available.

“Teleportation isn’t science fiction anymore. It’s becoming part of everyday life,” Zipline’s co-founder, Keller Cliffton said in a news release. “Every great transportation revolution has changed where people live, how businesses operate, and how economies grow. Together with Uber, we’re taking the next step toward building a world where getting what you need is as fast and effortless as sending a text, no matter where you are.”

Industry analysts view drone delivery as a potentially transformative technology for e-commerce and local commerce, particularly in suburban areas where rapid delivery can be challenging and costly using traditional transportation methods. Supporters of drone delivery also point to environmental benefits, including reduced vehicle traffic and lower carbon emissions.

Zipline’s drone system is designed to operate quietly while providing precise delivery capabilities. Company officials believe the technology can help consumers receive urgent or everyday items faster, while enabling small businesses to offer delivery services that were previously impractical due to cost or time constraints.

This could soon mean receiving food, groceries, medicine, and other products within minutes of placing an order. For merchants, it offers access to a growing autonomous delivery infrastructure without requiring significant investment in new logistics capabilities.

Zipline is a drone delivery service that operates on four continents, makes a delivery somewhere in the world every 20 seconds, and serves more than 5,000 hospitals and health facilities.

Uber Technologies Inc. develops and operates proprietary technology applications in Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific. The company operates through three segments: Mobility, Delivery, and Freight.
