Zentek Ltd. (ZEN) has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on a novel graphene-wrapped silicon anode material.

The material can be attached to the surface of graphene, which can then be used to protect against pathogens and treat disease in crops, livestock, and humans. It was developed by Professor Michael Pope of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo.

Zentek is a nanotechnology company developing and commercializing next-gen healthcare solutions in the areas of prevention, detection, and treatment. It is focused on commercializing ZENGuard™, a coating shown to have 99 per cent antimicrobial activity and the potential to use similar compounds as products against infectious diseases.

Graphene can also advance energy storage and microchip technology because of its extremely high capacity and electron mobility.

Zentek CEO, Greg Fenton commented,

“Their innovation has the potential to improve the current lithium-ion battery by upgrading graphite to this graphene-wrapped silicon anode… the performance was also validated with commercial lithium iron phosphate cathodes suggesting they could be a drop-in solution for enhancing already available battery technologies.”

Silicon can possibly replace graphite as the dominant anode material in current Li-ion and next-generation batteries.

However, silicon expands by over 300 per cent when a battery is charged and discharged, which has limited commercialization efforts.

Zentek and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada have developed an improved method to enable high capacity, high cycle-life anodes by capturing them in a protective, crumpled graphene shell using a simple spray drying approach often used to generate most of the world’s dry powders.

Zentek Ltd. (ZEN) is up 9.27 per cent trading at $3.89 per share as of 4:00 p.m. EST.
