Drone Delivery Canada (TSXV:FLT) is set to begin commercial testing of its Robin XL drone model.

The company is currently focused on the implementation of its logistics software platform via the use of drone technology.

The Robin XL is larger than Drone Delivery Canada’s previous Sparrow model, with a maximum load capacity of 25 lbs.

The Robin XL has also been designed to deal with harsher environments, stronger winds and colder temperatures, and has a flight distance of 60 km.

Drone Delivery Canada’s Chief Technology Officer, Paul Di Benedetto, said that the development of the drone has been a collaborative effort.

“Our engineering team has been working alongside various commercial partners and clients to develop the Robin to satisfy their commercial requirements.

“We are very excited to commence flights with the Robin as our technology continues to evolve to address the requirements of our customers around the globe,” he said.

A key feature of the Robin XL is automatic cargo deployment.

With automated payload release, the need for a handler is eliminated. The drone will simply arrive at a predetermined location, drop the cargo off, and return to its originating point.

Testing of the Robin XL will be undertaken in Southern Ontario, with commercial routes expected to be operational as soon as the second quarter this year.

Drone Delivery Canada (FLYT) was down 9.46 per cent, with shares trading for C$0.67 at 10:36am EST.
