TAAT Lifestyle & Wellness (TAAT) has hired U.S. patent attorney Edmond DeFrank to secure its intellectual property.

DeFrank has experience servicing Fortune 100 firms, which involved trademark brand management and patent counselling.

Like most companies, TAAT seeks to further establish its IP portfolio and take measures into its own hands to assert and defend its IP rights, in all relevant global jurisdictions.

On September 14, 2020, TAAT announced it filed its first U.S. patent, which covers a refinement technique used in the processing of Beyond Tobacco. Said patent, causes the base material to taste and smell similar to real tobacco products.

DeFrank is a registered U.S. patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

During his time, he has written and prosecuted over 1000 trademark and patent applications for large corporations, educational institutions, and government agencies.

Some of the specializations DeFrank takes part in while doing his job are anti-counterfeiting by working with state, federal, and foreign government bodies. He does so to percent the importation and sale of goods that infringe upon clients’ IP rights. This is a major concern when it comes to the tobacco industry.

TAAT believes DeFrank’s knowledge and leadership will play a key role in maximizing the value of the company’s IP to include its brand names as well as propriety attributes relating to the various products.

TAAT’s CEO Setti Coscaralla mentions how the IP in the tobacco industry is a crucial element to its profitability.

“Behind the scenes there is a lot of groundwork being laid for potential expansions into new markets for which we must have a robust IP portfolio in order to be a viable competitor to existing tobacco companies,” he said.

“Mr. DeFrank has a very impressive track record as a versatile and proficient IP attorney, and we are most pleased to have him on our side,” he added.

DeFrank began his career with California’s Attorney General in the legal sector by dealing with consumer fraud, unfair competition, and counterfeit goods.

Eventually, he moved his way into an IP law firm providing services for a global video game manufacturer. This is where he started to take action against counterfeiters and their products while obstructing such products in the consumer market.

Neither TAAT nor DeFrank waisted anytime filing trademark applications.

“Proactively, we have filed trademark applications in more than 50 countries, and we are working on a broader IP strategy in preparation for potential expansions of TAAT into new markets,” said DeFrank.

TAAT Lifestyles & Wellness (TAAT) opened 2.25 per cent down for C$2.61 per share.
