Nouveau Monde (NOU) expects to start production at its new Québec plant midway through 2021.

The purification facility for lithium-ion battery material is a ‘ready to move in’ space.

The company expects to install recently arrived equipment shortly.

Once operational, the facility will begin producing high-purity spheronised and flake graphite for lithium-ion batteries and the renewable energy sector.

Besides lithium-ion batteries, Nouveau expects its high-purity graphite products to target high-growth markets such as fuel cells and 5G heat dissipation foils.

Upon reaching peak capacity, the Bécancour facility will be capable of producing 15-hundred tonnes of purified material per year, two state-of-the-art commercial-scale modules.

Nouveau Monde has also acquired 200 thousand square metres of land, earmarked for its phase 2 expansion.

“The commercialization of our thermochemical purification process is a very important milestone for the company,” said CEO Eric Desaulniers.

“We’re excited but remain clear-headed and focused on the end goal of becoming a tier-1 supplier of anode material for lithium-ion batteries,” added Desaulniers.

Nouveau Monde is down 5.7 per cent on the day, with shares trading at C$1.49 at 2:30 pm EST.
