Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG) has manufactured the first graphene aluminum-ion batteries at its pilot plant in Australia.

The first batch of graphene and aluminum-ion (G+AI) batteries were manufactured in coin cell format, kick-starting operations at the pilot production and testing plant.

Additional equipment to enable the manufacture G+AI batteries in pouch pack cell format is expected to arrive in early 2022.

Craig Nicol, Graphene’s managing director and CEO, commented on the new pilot plant.

“The commissioning of our Battery Pilot Plant is an important milestone for GMG,” he said. “Not only will it allow us to develop, manufacture and test our own G+AI Battery coin cell and subsequently pouch packs in-house, it will also enable the company to accelerate the commercial development of our G+AI Batteries, work with future customers, and further build on our internal expertise.

“We also expect the Battery Pilot Plant to accelerate optimisation of our G+AI Battery prototypes, building on the encouraging results we have already achieved which are generating so much interest from prospective customers.”

Subject to successful commercial prototypes and a final investment decision, Graphene Manufacturing Group plans to construct a commercial manufacturing facility where it will commercially produce coin cell G+AI batteries.

The location of this manufacturing facility is not yet decided, but it will likely be in Australia where the company’s headquarters and existing operations are located.

In October, Graphene signed a letter of agreement with Robert Bosch Australia Pty Ltd to design and construct the manufacturing facility.

Graphene’s current cash balance is approximately A$15.6m, leaving the company well-funded for the next stage of its growth plans.

Graphene Manufacturing Group is an Australian based clean-tech company that produces graphene and hydrogen by cracking natural gas instead of mining graphite.

Shares in Graphene Manufacturing Group Ltd. (GMG) are up 7.07 per cent, trading at $5.30 per share as of 12:52 pm EST.
