Rogers Communications (TSX:RCI) unveiled Rogers Satellite, a new satellite-to-mobile text messaging service that seeks to expand wireless coverage across Canada. With this launch, Rogers now covers over 5.4 million square kilometres—more than 2.5 times the area served by other Canadian wireless providers.

Starting today, Canadians can sign up for the Rogers Satellite beta trial at no cost. The service initially supports text messaging and text-to-911, with plans to expand to apps, data, and voice services, including 911 voice support, later this year.

“Earlier this month Rogers celebrated the 40th anniversary of the first wireless call in Canada, and this new technology represents the next big leap in wireless connectivity,” Tony Staffieri, Rogers’ president and CEO said in a news release.

The service leverages low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites and Rogers’ national wireless spectrum, enabling compatibility with most modern smartphones. This means users can send a message from virtually anywhere—whether stranded on a remote highway or hiking in the wilderness.

Once the beta trial concludes in October, Rogers Satellite will be included at no additional cost for customers on the Rogers Ultimate Plan. It will also be available to all Canadians for $15/month, with beta participants receiving a C$5/month discount for the first year.

Rogers has invested C$45 billion over the past 40 years to lead wireless innovation in Canada. From 1G voice calls to the ultra-fast speeds of 5G+, the company continues to push boundaries. Today, Rogers is recognized as Canada’s most reliable 5G+ network.

Rogers Communications Inc. is a Canadian wireless, cable and media company that provides connectivity and entertainment.

Rogers stock (TSX:RCI.A) last traded at C$48.50 and has risen 4.79 per cent since the year began but lost 9.67 per cent since this time last year.
