Canada’s main stock index saw modest growth on Monday, as investors took a cautious stance ahead of the Bank of Canada’s upcoming interest rate decision on Wednesday. Many economists expect the central bank to lower its overnight rate by 0.25 per cent, citing signs of a weakening labour market and slowing economic momentum.

Wall Street saw some saw some gains that were fuelled by economic data indicating a softening job market and subdued inflation—factors that have strengthened expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut following its Wednesday meeting. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump expressed optimism about ongoing trade talks with China. However, tensions flared as China’s market regulator accused Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) of breaching anti-monopoly laws and announced it would continue investigating the company. Nvidia’s stock fell 0.04 per cent in response.
