Canada’s main stock index closed higher Thursday as positive earnings from energy and mining companies improved investor sentiment, while persistent Middle East uncertainty provided support for gold prices.

Meanwhile, US equities rebounded after the previous session’s selloff, which followed the Federal Reserve’s decision to keep rates on hold. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock rose 15.52 per cent and chipmakers were also among the biggest contributors to the rally.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.41 cents US compared to 71.15 cents US on Wednesday.

US crude futures traded $0.96 lower at US$83.50 a barrel, and the Brent contract lost US$1.82 to US$88.92 a barrel.

The price of gold was up US$72.49 to US$4,112.77.

In world markets, the Nikkei was up 433.24 points to ¥61,867.43, the Hang Seng was up 50.96 points to HK$25,858.88, the FTSE was down 11.14 points to ₤10,897.27, and the DAX was up 151.55 points to €25,612.03.
