Canadian equities finished higher on Tuesday, supported by solid bank earnings despite renewed concerns over trade relations with the United States. Investors are closely watching the latest developments after President Donald Trump threatened to double tariffs on Canadian vehicles and auto parts to 50 per cent starting January 1, 2027. The announcement follows the collapse of trade negotiations last week. A previously proposed agreement would have reduced tariffs on Canadian cars and light trucks to 15 per cent and cut steel and aluminum duties to 25 per cent.

South of the border, US stocks extended their gains as Treasury yields continued to ease. Technology shares, particularly semiconductor companies, moved higher ahead of Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) awaited earnings release.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.29 cents US compared to 72.21 cents US on Monday.

US crude futures traded US$2.89 lower at US$82.12 a barrel, and the Brent contract lost US$3.85 to US$88.32 a barrel.

The price of gold was up US$11.20 to US$4,649.99.

In world markets, the Nikkei was up 328.34 points to ¥65,856.43, the Hang Seng was down 6.23 points to HK$25,511.10, the FTSE was up 31.84 points to ₤10,886.16, and the DAX was up 159.54 points to €26,266.14.
