After touching a record high in the previous session, Canada’s leading stock index traded sideways on Wednesday as positive earnings from National Bank of Canada (TSX:NA) were offset by concerns surrounding the continuing trade dispute with the United States. Investors remained attentive to developments after Canada introduced retaliatory tariffs on approximately C$20 billion of annual US imports, matching the latest US tariff measures.

Meanwhile, US markets saw limited movement following the publication of July’s Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index. The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure remained at an annualized rate of 3.7 per cent, exceeding forecasts slightly and signalling that consumer cost pressures remain persistent.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.05 cents US compared to 72.29 cents US on Tuesday.

US crude futures traded $0.08 lower at US$82.28 a barrel, and the Brent contract lost $0.74 to US$87.74 a barrel.

The price of gold was down US$44.74 to US$4,592.86.

In world markets, the Nikkei was up 405.73 points to ¥66,262.16, the Hang Seng was up 141.87 points to HK$25,652.97, the FTSE was down 8.04 points to ₤10,878.12, and the DAX was up 19.82 points to €26,285.96.
