Markets were mixed today as a sharp rise in crude prices and climbing bond yields weighed on Wall Street, with chip stocks retreating despite Samsung’s record profit guidance. The TSX edged up 0.04% while the TSX Venture Index slipped 0.49%, and in the U.S. the Dow was essentially flat, down 0.02%, while the Nasdaq fell 0.62%. The FTSE 100 gained 0.22%.
Oil jumped 3.50% as crude climbed above $105 a barrel on Brent, adding to pressure from rising bond yields. Gold rose 0.44% while copper eased 0.56%, and Bitcoin fell 1.50% to just under C$117,000 as the U.S. dollar price slipped below $83,000 on weakening ETF demand. At home, Prime Minister Carney was in Sherbrooke for a clean energy announcement.
