The past week has seen a mixed performance for the TSX, reflecting the varied fortunes of different market sectors. While energy stocks experienced fluctuations, other sectors showed resilience, leading to a modest overall gain for the index. The inauguration of Donald Trump for a second term as U.S. President has added to market uncertainty, with traders anxious about potential tariff threats against Canada.
Oil prices have slid steadily this week as Trump said he would declare a “national energy emergency” and fill up reserves to export American energy.
Trump also told media this week that he thought Gaza was “phenomenal”, praising its weather and location. There is a third reason he likes the area so much, but he didn’t say it out loud this time.
Veren (TSX:VRN, Forum) made headlines this week with the release of its 2024 independent reserves report. The company reported significant increases in reserves across all categories, driven by organic additions. Proved plus Probable (2P) reserves totaled 1,133.3 million boe (MMboe), proved reserves were 739.1 MMboe, and proved developed producing reserves stood at 333.1 MMboe.
The company’s 2P reserve life index is approximately 16 years, based on the mid-point of 2025 annual average production guidance. Veren achieved organic reserve additions of 121.4 MMboe on a 2P basis, replacing 173 per cent of its 2024 annual production. The Alberta Montney asset contributed 65 per cent of these additions, with the Kaybob Duvernay asset providing the remainder.

Oncolytics Biotech (TSX:ONC, Forum), a clinical-stage company specializing in immunotherapy for oncology, announced that Germany’s Paul-Ehrlich-Institute has approved the continuation of patient enrollment into Cohort 5 of the GOBLET study. This cohort is evaluating pelareorep in combination with modified FOLFIRINOX (mFOLFIRINOX) with or without atezolizumab in newly diagnosed pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients.
Following a positive safety review by the independent Data Safety Monitoring Board, the approval allows Cohort 5 to progress to full enrollment. Early safety data will be presented at the upcoming 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium later this month, with initial efficacy results expected in the second half of the year.
Quantum eMotion (TSXV:QNC, Forum) has shared groundbreaking results from its quantum-based hardware wallet for cryptocurrency transactions. Leveraging deep-learning algorithms, intelligent key generation, and its proprietary Quantum Random Number Generation technology, the wallet significantly reduces the risk of monetary loss by up to 98 per cent compared to conventional hierarchical deterministic wallets.
The innovation also reduces costs by reusing hardware for generating both parent and child keys and offers a reset mechanism for protection against attacks and privilege escalation. This milestone follows a dispute with Terranova Defense Solutions, which publicly criticized the company’s technology in a since-deleted blog post. Quantum eMotion has taken legal action to resolve the issue.
