MDA Space (TSX:MDA) has signed a partnership agreement with the Government of Canada and Telesat (TSX:TSAT) to develop and deliver military satellite communications (MILSATCOM) capabilities. The initiative is part of the Enhanced Satellite Communication Project – Polar (ESCP-P), a longstanding program aimed at improving secure communications for Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) operations in the Arctic.
The ESCP-P project, overseen by Canada’s newly established Defence Investment Agency (DIA), is designed to provide wideband and narrowband satellite communications essential for continental defence and sovereignty missions. These capabilities can support the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and broader CAF operations in remote and northern regions.
The Government of Canada selected MDA Space and Telesat as partners based on their expertise in secure satellite systems and space-based infrastructure. The collaboration is expected to leverage domestic industry strengths while reinforcing Canada’s commitment to Arctic security and its obligations under NORAD and NATO.
“MDA Space has a long history as a trusted mission partner to the Canadian Armed Forces, delivering the advanced technologies and mission outcomes they need to accomplish their critical mandate,” MDA Space’s CEO, Mike Greenley said in a news release. “We understand the significance of the missions they execute and the challenges inherent in their operations. With this partnership, and in close collaboration with the Department of National Defence and Telesat, we are ready to deliver essential Arctic military satellite communications capabilities at the speed of innovation and operational relevance.”
Under Canada’s Industrial and Technological Benefits (ITB) Policy, the project will aim to generate high-value jobs, foster innovation, and strengthen the country’s space and defence sectors. Small and medium-sized businesses within Canada’s space ecosystem are expected to play a role in delivering components and services for the program.
“The Enhanced Satellite Communications Project – Polar marks a critical advancement for Canada’s defence and sovereignty, particularly across our Arctic and northern regions. By investing in cutting-edge satellite communications, we are providing the Canadian Armed Forces with secure, resilient, and modern capabilities—allowing them to safeguard our airspace, respond quickly to emerging threats, and support communities throughout the Arctic and the North,” Minister of National Defence, David McGuinty added in another media statement.
Telesat, with more than five decades of experience in satellite engineering and operations, will contribute to the development of a MILSATCOM architecture tailored to Canada’s needs. The system is intended to enhance secure communications for military operations and safeguard Arctic sovereignty.
The ESCP-P initiative represents a multi-billion-dollar investment in Canada’s defence infrastructure and is considered a key element in modernizing the country’s military communications capabilities.
MDA Space is a go-to name for robotics, satellite systems, and geointelligence in the global space industry, with a pioneering track record spanning over 450 missions.
Telesat is one of the world’s largest satellite operators.
Telesat stock (TSX:TSAT) last traded at C$44.63 and has risen 20.36 per cent in the past month with 88.87 per cent growth since the start of the year.
