Volatus Aerospace acquires UK RPAS technologies to boost Canada’s sovereign defense manufacturing
Drone company Volatus Aerospace (TSXV:FLT) has acquired a suite of advanced Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) technologies from UK-based Caliburn Holdings LLP. The C$2 million transaction, paid in Volatus common shares, marks a leap in strengthening Canada’s sovereign aerospace and defense manufacturing capabilities.
The deal includes 2.6 million FLT shares issued at a 15-day volume-weighted average price of $0.76. Half of the shares will carry a four-month no-trade hold, while the remaining half will be subject to a 24-month hold. The transaction is expected to close around November 1, pending board and regulatory approvals.
Volatus will also onboard Caliburn’s engineering team, who will relocate to Mirabel, Québec, to lead production, testing, and certification at the newly launched Volatus Innovation and Drone Manufacturing Facility within YMX Innovation. This facility, located at YMX International Aerocity of Mirabel, is envisioned as a national hub for advanced aerospace systems and a cornerstone of Volatus’ “Made-in-Canada” strategy.
“This acquisition represents more than just new aircraft, it’s about building sovereign capability,” Glen Lynch, Volatus Aerospace’s CEO, said in a news release. “Canada has the talent, infrastructure, and strategic imperative to design and manufacture world-class uncrewed systems right here at home. By bringing this technology to Mirabel, we’re ensuring that critical aerospace innovation, jobs, and intellectual property stay in Canada while strengthening our ability to support NATO and allied partners.”
The acquisition also includes three scalable UAS platforms with takeoff weights ranging from 100kg to 265kg, capable of carrying payloads between 15kg and 50kg. These aircraft boast endurance from 12 hours to an unprecedented seven days of continuous flight, making them ideal for defense, public safety, and infrastructure monitoring missions.
The move aims to align with Canada’s defense-industrial policy and its commitment to reaching the NATO target of 2 per cent defense spending. It also wants to help establish Québec’s position as a leader in aerospace innovation and technological sovereignty.

The next stage of autonomous drone swarm technology
Meanwhile, Palladyne AI (NASDAQ:PDYN), a leading developer of artificial intelligence software for robotic platforms, and Draganfly (CSE:DPRO), a pioneer in drone solutions and systems, have announced a collaboration aimed at integrating Palladyne’s cutting-edge autonomy software into Draganfly’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms.
At the heart of this partnership is Palladyne Pilot, an edge-based, platform-agnostic AI software designed to enable intelligent swarming and collaborative operations among multiple UAVs. The software allows a single operator to manage a coordinated drone team, leveraging sensor fusion from diverse sources to autonomously detect, track, classify, and identify targets. This capability significantly enhances mission efficiency and operational flexibility, particularly in defense, surveillance, and commercial applications.
Draganfly, with over two decades of experience serving government and commercial clients, will embed Palladyne Pilot into its modular UAV systems. This integration is expected to unlock advanced features beyond autonomous swarm operations, including real-time intelligence gathering and reduced operator workload. The companies emphasized that the technology will be available for deployment globally, subject to necessary government approvals.
