FLYHT Aerospace (TSXV:FLY) will provide free weather data to meteorological agencies impacted by COVID-related airline declines.
A major consequence of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has been the grounding of global airline flights everywhere.
Due to decreasing airline traffic, airborne meteorological data collection has dipped by over 40 per cent since March 20. This has made it difficult for meteorological agencies worldwide to accurately forecast weather.
In order to fill the gap, FLYHT will temporarily license its TAMDAR weather data to these agencies, for free. TAMDAR stands for Tropospheric Airborne Meteorological Data Reporting.
Through its commercial partner, Synoptic Data PBC, FLYHT will allow meteorological agencies worldwide to utilise TAMDAR for non-commercial use. The companies hope that access to the new data will assist with weather forecasts during the COVID-19 crisis.
FLYHT and Synoptic already provide TAMDAR weather data and AMDAR (Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay) to the National Mesonet Program. This is done through the Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS).
Synoptic is using the Global Telecommunication System (GTS) to distribute the data to World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) members.
Stewart Taylor, Vice-Chair of the WMO’s Aircraft Based Observation programme, thanked FLYHT and Synoptic for making the data available.
“The WMO ABO programme has been aware of TAMDAR’s ability to supplement aircraft upper air atmospheric measurements since the first data results from the Great Lakes Fleet Experiment.
“Making this data available will help us overcome current obstacles and carry on with our mission,” he said.
