Leading Edge Materials Corp. (TSXV: LEM) has begun environmental impact assessment work for its Norra Kärr Heavy Rare Earth Elements Project in Sweden, a step the company says is needed before it can apply for an environmental permit to develop the mine.

The company said the work is being carried out by its wholly owned Swedish subsidiary, Greenna Mineral AB, and that it has appointed Swedish environmental consultancy Ecogain to support the assessment and related studies required for environmental permitting.

Leading Edge Materials described the assessment as part of the permitting process that follows the Swedish Government’s decision to grant an Exploitation Concession for Norra Kärr. The company characterized the concession as confirming the right to extract the mineral deposit and establishing that the site is suitable for mining.

The next step is an environmental permit under the Swedish Environmental Code, which the company plans to apply for during 2027. According to the release, the permit is reviewed by the Land and Environment Court and would set the detailed conditions under which mining operations may be carried out.

Leading Edge Materials said the environmental impact assessment will build on a revised project design presented in the concession application, under which chemical processing would take place at a separate location, which it said would significantly reduce the project’s environmental footprint at the mine site.

The company said initial work will focus on a nature value inventory and preliminary studies, with the scope of further investigations to be determined through consultations with authorities, local communities and other stakeholders.

In the release, Chief Executive Officer Kurt Budge said, “The start of the Environmental Impact Assessment marks an important milestone for Norra Kärr. With the Exploitation Concession secured, we are now focused on building the robust, science-based foundation required for a successful environmental permit application.”

Leading Edge Materials noted that the Swedish Government granted a 25-year mining lease for Norra Kärr on 25 June 2026. The company describes Norra Kärr as a significant European deposit of heavy rare earth elements, including dysprosium, terbium and yttrium.
