Lithium Americas (LAC) has initiated construction at its Thacker Pass lithium project in Nevada.
Thacker Pass – the largest known source of lithium in the U.S. – will be scaled to 80,000 tonnes of battery-quality lithium carbonate per year over two equal phases, the first of which is expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
The news follows the receipt of a notice to proceed from the Bureau of Land Management, a favourable ruling from the US District Court, District of Nevada, and a $650 million investment from General Motors.
Ongoing work includes site preparation, geotechnical drilling, water pipeline development and associated infrastructure.
The company has awarded contracts for major earthworks, which are slated to begin in the second half of 2023. Other awarded contracts include lithium carbonate and purification (Aquatech International), a sulfuric acid plant (EXP Global) and heat recovery (MECS).
“Starting construction is a momentous milestone for Thacker Pass and one we have been working towards for over a decade,” stated Jonathan Evans, Lithium Americas’ President and CEO. “We are excited about the prospect of generating economic growth in northern Nevada and playing a major role in the domestic lithium supply chain for electric vehicles.”
